Moving to France
A new beginning for Rhae & Keith Elliott
Life in France
June 19, 1944 on their drive from the South of France to the Normandy invasion area, members of the German 2nd SS Panzer Division marched to Orador. They suspected the town supported the French resistance and was harbouring gold, weapons and ammunition.
About 2pm all the inhabitants were ordered to gather in the town square. The population had been swollen by local farmers and schoolchildren coming in for the weekly tobacco ration and the school medical checks. The people were alarmed but nobody panicked, they had done nothing wrong.
In the events that followed almost the entire population of the town was massacred and the buildings destroyed….
If you live in Central France or are a visitor you must go to Oradour-sur-Glane.
It is a most poingnant memorial to the tragic events that occured in the second world war.
